The Nebraska women's basketball team will have to wait until Wednesday, March 25, to open play in the 2009 Women's National Invitation Tournament.
The Huskers, who earned a first-round bye in the 48-team event, are scheduled to take on New Mexico at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, N.M., on Wednesday at 8 p.m. (Central). The Santa Ana Star Center, which is 30 miles north of The Pit, seats approximately 6,000 fans for basketball and will serve as the Lobos' home-away-from-home against the Huskers.
New Mexico (23-10) advanced to the second round of the WNIT with a 72-44 win over Southern at The Pit in Albuquerque. A total of 3,105 fans attended the UNM win over Southern on Wednesday night on the Lobos' traditional home court.
New Mexico will now turn The Pit over to the NCAA Tournament, which will host first- and second-round games in the building on Saturday and Monday night. Following the NCAA Tournament, The Pit will be the site of a professional rodeo event, before being closed for an extended period for major renovations.
The Lobos, who have never played a game at the Santa Ana Star Center, defeated Nebraska, 62-51, at The Pit in the championship game of the Holiday Inn & Suites Express Midtown Thanksgiving Tournament on Nov. 29.
If Nebraska can knock off the Lobos in the rematch, the Huskers have been informed by the WNIT that the Devaney Center will be the site of NU's third-round game in the tournament.
