Four Husker wrestlers picked up second-round wins in Thursday night’s Session II to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2009 NCAA Championships in Saint Louis. NU picked up seven bonus-point victories in the session to finish the day with 24 points in the team race. Iowa State and Iowa are tied for first with 33 points, while Ohio State sits third with 30.

The highlight of the session for Nebraska came at 157 pounds, as junior Jordan Burroughs picked up his second pin of the season. The Sicklerville, N.J., native earned two takedowns within the first minute of action against Purdue’s Colton Salazar, before catching the Boilermaker on his back at the 2:27 mark. Burroughs faces ninth-seeded Cyler Sanderson of Iowa State in the quarterfinals tomorrow morning.

Senior Vince Jones and junior Craig Brester added major decisions at 184 and 197 pounds in the championship bracket. Jones earned a reversal on Purdue’s A.J. Kissel with 20 seconds left, added a quick two-point nearfall, and claimed the winning-margin by a takedown with seven seconds left. Jones finished the match with a 6-1 run in the final 20 seconds. Jones will face fourth-seeded Kirk Smith of Boise State next.

Brester jumped out to a 6-0 lead on Old Dominion’s Jesse Strawn courtesy of two nearfalls in the first minute. Strawn cut the lead to two in the second period, but Brester earned two takedowns in the final period to pull away, 14-5. Brester squares off against ninth-seeded Cayle Byers of George Mason in the quarterfinals.

Senior Brandon Browne racked up an early 6-1 lead on Boise State’s Nathan Lee en route to claiming a 9-6 decision. Lee cut the lead to three in the second period, but Browne earned an escape and takedown in the final period to secure the win. Browne draws No. 11 Quentin Wright of Penn State tomorrow morning.

Junior Stephen Dwyer lost a 5-2 decision to Bucknell’s Andrew Rendos to fall into the consolation bracket. Neither wrestler could score in the first period, and Rendos rode out Dwyer in the second to take a 2-0 lead into the final period. Dwyer cut Rendos and earned a takedown 35 seconds into the final period, but couldn’t find the winning takedown. Dwyer begins wrestleback action against Oregon State’s Keegan Davis tomorrow.

Redshirt freshman Tucker Lane scored two takedowns and racked up 1:46 in riding time for a 6-0 decision over UC Davis’ Ricardo Alcala. Lane faces North Carolina’s Justin Dobies tomorrow.

Senior Robert Sanders ended his Husker career with a 10-1 loss to Bucknell’s Kevin LeValley at 149 pounds. Sanders posted a career-high 26 wins during the 2008-09 season, finishing with a 64-50 career record.

Friday’s action begins at 10 a.m. for the morning session and 6 p.m. for the night session.
