LINCOLN, NE – The Lincoln Saltdogs couldn’t finish a sweep of Wichita Sunday, falling 4-0 to the Wingnuts at Haymarket Park. Lincoln ends the first half with a 22-26 record.
Wichita broke a scoreless tie in the seventh, scoring a run with two out on an infield single by Nick Blasi against Lincoln reliever Matt Reilly (1-1). Albenis Machado nearly threw Blasi out on a bang-bang play, and Saltdogs manager Marty Scott was ejected from the game for arguing the call. The Wingnuts then put the game away with three runs in the eighth.
The Saltdogs, on the other hand, managed just seven hits on the night, and failed to come through in several two-out RBI situations, including leaving the bases loaded in the first. The loss wasted fine pitching efforts by starter Jonathan Figueroa and reliever Tim Brown. Figueroa, starting for the second time in three days after his Friday start was suspended by rain in the third inning, tossed three scoreless innings and allowed just one hit. Brown added another three scoreless innings of relief, and escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the sixth by recording a strikeout and a foulout.
Brandon Jones had the only multi-hit night for the Saltdogs, going 2-for-4. Adam Daniels pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning for Lincoln.
After an off-day Monday, the Saltdogs head to Sioux City on Tuesday to open the second half. Righty Brian Campbell will make the start for Lincoln.
