Nebraska Assistant Coaches Fired

Nebraska assistant coaches Turner Gill and Scott Downing are being retained by new Husker head coach Bill Callahan. But the rest of the staff of former coach Frank Solich is gone.

That is the report from the Lincoln Journal Star Monday following what one assistant said were very brief meetings with Callahan.

The Omaha World-Herald reports Gill is weighing whether to stay on the staff or pursue other options. He reportedly would be moved to wide receiver coach after being quarterbacks coach since 1992.

Downing, who is recruiting coordinator and coached tight ends and kickers, will continue his recruiting duties, at least until national letter of intent signing day Feb. 4.

Out are defensive coordinator Bo Pelini, and fellow defensive coaches Jeff Jamrog on the line, Jimmy Williams with linebackers and Marvin Sanders with the secondary.

Out on the offense are line coach and offensive coordinator Barney Cotton, receivers coach Ron Brown and running backs coach Tim Albin.
