Two long-time Cornhusker State Games volunteers carried the CSG Torch into Haymarket Park Friday, ending the 1,100 mile journey that began west of Kimball two weeks ago. Scott Wieskamp and Kerry McDermott were the torch runners.
Wieskamp has served on the CSG Opening Ceremonies Committee for the past eight years and is the head of maintenance for Lincoln Public Schools. McDermott, who is the University of Nebraska Head Coach for Men's Tennis, is a formal National Congress of State Games Athlete of the Year and currently directs the Games' tennis tournament. The two are friends, training partners and regulars at area endurance races.
The Torch Run is sponsored by U.S. Cellular and the Nebraska National Guard. While the highway portion wraps up Friday, the Torch Run doesn't officially end until the lighting of the caldron by a mystery athlete at the Opening Ceremonies on July 20.
Competitions take place July 20-29 in Lincoln with 59 sports for Nebraskans of all ages and abilities. The early registration deadline is Monday, June 25. Those interested can register online at CornhuskerStateGames.com or call 1-800-30-GAMES for more information.
