The Nebraska soccer team (6-8-1, 3-4-0 Big Ten) fell behind early to No. 4 Penn State(13-2-0, 7-0-0 Big Ten) and was never able to recover, as the Huskers fell 4-0 to the 14-time defending Big Ten champions on Friday night at the Nebraska Soccer Field. The Huskers were only out-shot, 15-13, on the night, but were unable to get past the Nittany Lions’ stout defense, as the Huskers put just three shots on goal against Erin McNulty.
Freshman Caroline Flynn continually attacked the PSU defense with a team-high four shots, including one on goal, while Caroline Gray added three shots on the night.
The Nittany Lions jumped to a 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the game when Maya Hayes, the 2011 Big Ten Forward of the Year, scored her 10th goal of the season on an assist from Christine Nairn. Nairn drove the ball up the north side of the field and when NU goalie Emma Stevens shifted to defend Nairn, she crossed the ball to Hayes, who was coming up the middle of the field and delivered a shot from 15 yards straight out.
Mallory Weber pushed PSU’s lead to 2-0 at 20:23 with her ninth goal of the year. The freshman blasted a shot from 20 yards away and when a pair of Husker defenders tried to block the shot, the ball got deflected off one of the Huskers’ legs and slipped past Stevens.
Hayes later added her second goal of the game at 81:19 when Stevens was unable to control a cross and Hayes stole the ball and dribbled in for an easy open-net shot. Hayes notched her fifth point of the game at 84:17 when she assisted on Taylor Schram’s second goal of the season.
