Kearney Little League is just one game away from being the first little league team from Nebraska to represent the Midwest region in Williamsport, PA at the Little League World Series. They play North/South Dakota on Saturday at 1. Their manager, Brad Wegner, spoke to us about how they're emphasizing defense in their focus on making that happen.
Wegner said, "I think what we're all taking to the kids is defense. They've made solid defensive plays the whole time and we just want to keep doing that because we've watched and it's been close. It's come down to one defensive miscue. Typically, you can name in the game what they all saw. And they all get the same play. There's just one that sticks out. A guy drops a fly ball or gives up a grounder. It just gives us an extra out an inning and we take it from there and score some runs. Defense, pitching, that's kind of what everyone talks about at this level and that's what it going to take."
North/South Dakota is the one remaining team Kearney will need to get past to go to Williamsport. Kearney has not lost a game since becoming an all star team this summer. This is a rematch of last season's Midwest Championship, but the Dakotas are being represented by a different team this go around. Kearney took down the Dakotas 7-4 in their previous meeting on Monday. The game will be broadcasted on ESPN.
