The Kearney Little League All-Stars will make their long awaited return home on Thursday, August 23rd.
The public is welcomed to join the first Nebraska Little League team ever to qualify for the Little League World Series at 4pm at the Viaero Event Center south of the Kearney Interstate 80 exit. The 2012 Kearney Little League All-Stars will arrive in torn in vans coming down Highway 30 before their route turns down 2nd Avenue towards the Viaero Event Center. The Little League Board is encouraging fans to bring signs welcoming the team home.
The program of the team's homecoming will include a few remarks from coaches.
Kearney went undefeated in the Nebraska Little League State tournament as well as the Regional Tournament in Indianapolis where they became the Midwest representatives for the 66th Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA. They are the first Nebraska team to qualify for the Little League World Series.
Kearney lost its first game in the Little League World Series on August 16th to Goodlettsville, Tennessee, the Southeast Champions, 1-12. Two days later on August 18th, Kearney was defeated by the New England champions, Fairfield, CT, 0-12. On August 20th, they ended their time in Williamsport, PA with a 17-1 win over the European Champions Ramstein Air Force Base from Germany. In that game, Kearney set a LLWS record by scoring 15 runs in an inning (the second inning).
A public celebration to further honor Kearney Little League is in the works and could occur as early as next week. The Governor has expressed interest in taking part in this event as well as other public figures. Memorial Field in Kearney has been mentioned as a possible site for the event. More details will be provided as soon as plans are finalized.
