Nebraska Wesleyan opened the 2012 GPAC Baseball Championships by going 1-1 on day one of the tournament opening the day with a 3-1 win over Concordia then falling to Mount Marty College, 5-1 in the night game.
The Prairie Wolves will now play at 12:30 pm on Friday at Haymarket Park against the winner of the Briar Cliff-Dakota Wesleyan game.
NWU (19-21) scored three runs in the top of the first inning against Concordia and that was all they would need to get the victory. Tanner Lewis hit a solo home run, followed by a two-run single from Beau Kelly to plate the three runs of the inning.
From there, NWU starter Matt Schommer threw a six-hit complete game allowing no earned runs in the seven inning contest.
The only Bulldog run came in the bottom of the second inning as a runner from third scored on a failed pick-off attempt at first base.
Kelly, Lewis and Josh Ostrom all had two hits on the day for NWU.
In the second game, Mount Marty scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back. Jason Schmidt hit a 3-run homer for the Lancers for the big blow.
The lone run for the Prairie Wolves came in the top of the seventh inning as Chris Johnson had an RBI groundout.
