It's what Husker fans have waited to hear for over two weeks, Rex Burkhead is back!
"It just feels good to be back there on the field and get a feel for the knee and be out there with the guys," Burkhead said.
Monday marked Burkhead's first practice with the Huskers since before the season opener. Head coach Bo Pelini says he's expected to make his return on Saturday and should be near 100 percent.
"Rex has played a lot of high quality football for a long time, it's not like he forgot how to run the ball. He knows what he's doing and first and foremost we wanted to make sure he was feeling healthy and confident," said Pelini.
"It's been tough, but at the same time, you've just gotta encourage your teammates when they are out there. The other backs out there doing their thing and staying positive about the whole situation," Burkhead said.
Burkhead's return to the Husker backfield is a welcome addition that excelled in his absence.
"I thought Ameer has run well, I thought Braylon has done a heck of a job, and Amani showed what his potential is down the road. And you add Rex to that mix and it's a pretty good tandem of backs," Pelini said.
Burkhead and the Huskers face Idaho State on Saturday with kickoff just shortly after 2:30 p.m. and the game can be seen on BTN.
