The Nebraska football team continued its week of practices leading up to Saturday's showdown against the Michigan State Spartans Wednesday. The team practiced for approximately 90 minutes, splitting time between the Hawks Championship Center and the Ed and Joyanne Gass Practice Fields.

The Husker offense will have its work cut out going against the Spartan defense, who statistically leads the Big Ten Conference in every major team defensive category. The Spartan defense allows only 15 points a game, while also allowing 91.2 rushing yards per game, which is the best in the Big Ten.

NU Running Backs Coach Ron Brown knows the young stable of running backs the Huskers feature will be ready for the challenge against a stout Spartan defense.

“Our guys have done really well this week.” Brown said, “I know Rex (Burkhead) has been in and out because of injury, but Ameer (Abdullah) has had a great season and has done exceptionally well in a lot of little things.”

Brown also noted that he loves how Abdullah, who ranks sixth in the Big Ten in rushing with 89.5 yards per game, works hard every day on the football field. Abdullah is looking to become the first Husker running back since 1994 to crack 100 yards in each of his first four career starts.

“I love that he is his own worst critique.” Brown said, “He sets the bar really high for himself.”

Brown said to expect to see a lot more of sophomore running back Braylon Heard, as well as true freshman Imani Cross in the coming weeks as well.

“I think Braylon has been a good spot player. He is the kind of kid that brings a nice change of pace.” Brown said, “Imani Cross is a big, physical guy, as time goes on you will see more of him. He is a kid that has really learned a lot as a true freshman.”
