Huskers Top Wichita State

The Nebraska volleyball team remained undefeated in the spring schedule with a 3-1 win (15-4, 15-0, 11-15, 15-6) over Wichita State Saturday night at the NU Coliseum.

In a match decided by side-out scoring, the Huskers were led by Morgan Broekhuis, who had 13 kills on 37 attacks. Hannah Werth notched 12 kills and 22 digs on the night, while Lauren Cook tabbed 39 assists. Lara Dykstra had 20 digs and Hayley Thramer finished with seven blocks, as the Huskers notched 95 total digs. Nebraska out-blocked Wichita State 15.5-7.5 and hit .209 as a team.

The Huskers went up early in the first set, taking a 4-3 lead and going up 8-3 on a service ace by Werth. Eight straight points put NU ahead 12-3 with a block by Cecilia Hall. The Huskers went on to take the set 15-4, leading the match 1-0.

In the first set Broekhuis led Nebraska with four kills and a hitting percentage of .667, while the Huskers hit .458 as a team. Nebraska totaled 10 digs, while Wichita State hit just .067. NU out-blocked the Shockers 5-1 in the set.

It was all Nebraska in the second set, as the Huskers took the set 15-0. Werth produced back-to-back service aces, while Thramer recorded four block assists in the set, helping NU close out any effort by Wichita State. Werth also notched four kills on eight attacks for the Huskers. Cook tabbed five digs, as Nebraska recorded 16 total digs. NU out-blocked WSU 5.5-0. Wichita State hit just -.214 in the set.

The Huskers used a kill by Werth to take a 2-1 lead early in the third set, while Werth and Hall teamed up for a block to give Nebraska a 4-1 advantage. Allison McNeal and Gina Mancuso recorded a block as Nebraska went up 7-3, but Wichita State put together a run to cut the Huskers' lead to 8-7. A kill by Mancuso put NU up 9-7, but WSU did not back down, scoring seven-straight points to go up 13-10 before taking the set 15-11.

In the third set, Mancuso notched four kills, while Hall, Broekhuis and Werth all had three kills. Cook tabbed 12 assists, as Werth also recorded 10 digs. Wichita State out-hit NU .219-.085 and out-blocked Nebraska 5.5-2.

Werth gave Nebraska 3-1 lead in the fourth set with another service ace. The Shockers took a 4-3 lead over the Huskers, but Cook used an ace of her own to give Nebraska 6-4 edge. A kill by Mancuso put the Huskers up 9-6, while Nebraska went on to take the set 15-6, winning the match 3-1.

In the fourth set, Broekhuis totaled six kills on 12 attacks, while Lara Dykstra notched 13 digs. The Huskers tabbed three team blocks, while Wichita State had just one.

Nebraska concludes the spring schedule on Saturday, April 21 at Iowa State. The match is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
