Lincoln - Brooke Thomason powered the Nebraska softball team to a doubleheader sweep of South Dakota by hitting a pair of home runs in the Huskers' 4-3 victory in game two at the Doris Bair Complex.

Thomason finished 2-for-2 with a walk, a two-run homer, a solo homer, two runs scored and three RBIs in the victory. Earlier Sunday, Thomason had a double and a home run in Nebraska's 8-2 victory in game one. Senior Gabby Banda also had two hits in game two, as NU out-hit USD 7-6.

Junior right-hander Tatum Edwards earned the win, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing only one hit. Freshman right-hander Emily Lockman earned the start and threw a scoreless first 3.0 innings, allowing only hit. Freshman right-hander Danica Bishop pitched the middle 1.1 innings and gave up three runs (two earned) on four hits.

Nebraska jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Freshman Dawna Tyson drew a two-out walk that was followed by a single from senior Megan Southworth. Freshman Alicia Armstrong then blooped an RBI single to right center that scored junior pinch runner Tatum Edwards.

Thomason extended the lead to 3-0 with a two-run homer with one out in the bottom of the third. Classmate Gabby Banda got the frame started with a leadoff single, before junior Taylor Edwards moved her into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Thomason then blasted an 0-2 offering to deep right for her second home run of the doubleheader.

South Dakota cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the second when Allie Daly launched a two-run homer to left.

The Coyotes then tied the game in the top of the fifth. A leadoff single and an error put runners at first and second with one out. The error cost the Huskers the lead one batter later, when Kate Snow delivered an RBI single up the middle. Bishop then walked Lindsey Boyd to load the bases with one out before being relieved by Tatum Edwards. Edwards' first pitch was lined to freshman first baseman Dawna Tyson who made the catch and stepped on first base to complete an inning-ending double play.

Thomason put the Huskers back on top in the bottom of the sixth when she blasted the first pitch of the inning of over the wall in right center for her second home run of the game and her third of the doubleheader.

That was enough support for Tatum Edwards seven of the eight batters she faced in closing out the one-run victory.

Nebraska returns to action next Sunday, when the Huskers travel to Omaha for a doubleheader with the Creighton Bluejays.
