Officials with SMG / Pershing Center, Lincoln Parks and Recreation Department and Mammoth, Inc. of Lawrence, Kansas announced plans for summer concerts at Lincoln’s Pinewood Bowl inside Pioneers Park.
SMG, along with Mammoth plan to produce several concerts through late summer to include a diverse schedule of entertainment. The partnership with SMG and City Parks and Recreation developed as a result of the Lincoln City Council approving alcohol sales for select events at the venue. SMG and Mammoth plan on a long-term relationship with the City to produce entertainment annually at the picturesque venue.
The venue will be called Pinewood Bowl Theater for purposes of marketing and branding the venue and its concerts. Surrounded by the natural beauty of evergreens, the venue offers a night like no other under the stars. This series will be independent of the annual play production produced by Pinewood Bowl, Inc. a local non-profit organization.
SMG / Pershing Center General Manager Tom Lorenz, said “Over the last several years , the SMG-Mammoth Productions team has dreamed about hosting great concerts at the beautiful Pinewood Bowl. Today we are so excited to make the initial 2012 season concert announcements. Concerts at the Pinewood Bowl Theater and its breathtaking natural setting will be a memorable experience for the fans as well as for the musicians.”
Lincoln Mayor Chris Beutler said “This beautiful venue has been underutilized for many years, and it’s exciting for the entire community that we’ll be able to enjoy more entertainment in this iconic facility.” Mayor Beutler added, “I encourage the community to support the new summer concert series at the Pinewood Bowl Theater as we start a new chapter in the long history of this iconic amphitheater.”
Pioneers Park, dedicated in 1930, comprises 1,130 acres including a beautiful nature center with eight miles of hiking trails, an 18-hole golf course, picnic areas, green space and the Pinewood Bowl, whose first stage was built in 1946-1947.
The Pinewood Bowl has been the site of hundreds of community events, including weddings and graduations. Easter sunrise services have been held in the Bowl since 1949. The Pinewood Bowl, Inc. Committee, have sponsored musicals at the facility since 1947. Pinewood Bowl, Inc. spokesperson Neal Stenberg commented “"Pinewood Bowl, Inc. has been providing very high quality and affordable musical theatre productions at the Bowl for more than 60 years. We are pleased that, with the advent of the summer concert series, even more people from Lincoln and the surrounding area will be encouraged to visit and enjoy this beautiful venue."
SMG, Mammoth Inc., the City of Lincoln and Pinewood Bowl, Inc. will continue to serve the community and surrounding areas by carrying on a rich and diverse performance tradition by introducing the Pinewood Bowl Theater.
