The University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s School of Music presents the Chiara String Quartet in the next Hixson-Lied Concert Series on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013, at 7:30 p.m. in Kimball Recital Hall.

Tickets are $20 adults, $10 seniors and $5 students and available at the Lied Center for Performing Arts Box Office at (402) 472-4747 or at the door.

The concert program includes Beethoven’s Quartet No. 1 in F Major, Op. 18; Dutilleux’s “Ainsi la Nuit;” and Ravel’s String Quartet in F Major.

The Chiara String Quartet includes Rebecca Fischer and Hyeyung Julie Yoon, violins; Jonah Sirota, viola; and Gregory Beaver, cello.

Beethoven’s Quartet No. 1 in F Major, Op. 18 was written between 1798 and 1800. Dutilleux’s Ainsi la Nuit was written in 1976 and consists of seven movements, some of which are linked by short “parentheses.” The function of these parentheses is to recall material that has already been heard and to introduce fragments that will be fully developed later. Ravel’s String Quartet in F Major, completed in 1903, was dedicated to his friend and teacher Gabriel Fauré. Originally receiving mixed reviews, it now is
one of the most widely performed chamber music works in the classical repertoire.

“We’re looking forward to featuring two gorgeous string quartets by French composers—Ainsi la Nuit by Henri Dutilleux, and the great string quartet by Maurice Ravel,” Fischer said. “It may not be surprising that both composers were quite influenced by the painters of their respective times, since in both pieces one can hear and almost feel an immense variety of sound colors associated with much French music. We will begin the program with Beethoven’s Quartet No. 1 in F Major, Op. 18, a memorable work, the slow movement of which was inspired by the heart-breaking burial scene in Romeo and Juliet.”

Renowned for bringing fresh excitement to traditional string quartet repertoire, as well as for creating insightful interpretations of new music, the Chiara String Quartet captivates its audiences throughout the country. The Chiara has established itself as among America’s most respected ensembles and celebrates 13 seasons of playing together in 2012-2013.

The Chiara Quartet have been artists-in-residence at UNL since 2005. In the summer, they are in residence at Greenwood Music Camp and the UNL Chamber Music Institute.

Their recording of Jefferson Friedman’s String Quartet No. 3 was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2011.

The Chiara String Quartet have one additional concert date in their Hixson-Lied Concert Series: March 26 at 7:30 p.m. in Kimball Recital Hall.
