The Haymarket Theatre, Lincoln
The Haymarket Theatre proudly presents a new vision of the classic Shakespeare tragedy, Hamlet. The Elizabethan tale of murder, revenge, and betrayal is set in a dystopian world where even the highest in the land are now living amongst the rubble of their ruined world. The story revolves around the Prince of Denmark lamenting the marriage of his mother, the Queen, to his uncle. When supernatural events begin to occur on the grounds of Elsinore, Hamlet investigates and discovers that something is indeed rotten in the state of Denmark. The concept, the brainchild of Ashley Namuth and director Jordan Deffenbaugh, drew upon the deviant subculture of New York in the 1960s, a time chronicled in the James Mills’ novel The Panic in Needle Park. Using the time described in Mills’ novel as a base concept more elements of varying subcultures were added to flesh out the world of Hamlet.
