Hurricane Maria is slamming the Caribbean as a powerful category 5 storm. It made landfall last night on the island of Dominica and has set a course for the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

Potash Boom-Town

For a few years, the area around Antioch was one of the most important areas for the production of potash. When World War I broke out, there was not a way to get potash from European sources. Potash was an important fertilizer that farmers used in the cotton belt. Two University of Nebraska graduates discovered how to separate potash from alkaline lakes in the area around Antioch, just east of Alliance. Large-scale production of potash then began in 1916.

Inmate charged with murder due in court
