The first tropical depression of the season has formed over the eastern Pacific Ocean, but it was not a threat to land.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said Monday that the system was far from the coast, about 655 miles south-southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico.

Forecasters say it could get stronger in the next day or so. It was expected to become a tropical storm late Monday or early Tuesday.

The depression was moving west, away from land, at about 8 mph. Maximum sustained winds were at 35 mph.
