Dozens of wildfires have broken out across Greece, torching olive groves, cutting off villages and sending residents fleeing.

Officials say 65 fires have broken out across Greece since late Friday, fanned by high winds. One of the largest has come perilously close to the northern suburbs of Athens.

Flames raced toward three villages near the town of Marathon, 25 miles northeast of the Greek capital. Some homes were seen burning.

The Greek Army has moved anti-aircraft missiles from a nearby base.

The government has declared a state of emergency for the region of Attica.
