Firefighters say about 20 structures have been lost to a California wildfire about 10 miles southeast of the Mojave Desert town of Tehachapi.

Kern County Fire Department Engineer Anthony Romero says the fire erupted about 3 p.m. Tuesday and has grown to 400 acres.

Officials say 150 structures are threatened and the small hill community known as Old West Ranch is being evacuated. The area is about 70 miles north of Los Angeles.

In northern Kern County, an eight-square-mile wildfire in Sequoia National Forest earlier destroyed six homes and forced the evacuation of a camp for juvenile offenders near Kernville.

Firefighters in far northeastern California, meanwhile, have partial containment of lightning-sparked fires in Lassen County.
