After reopening all lanes of Interstate 75 last night, authorities near Gainesville, Fla., have closed it again because of poor visibility caused by fog and smoke.
The highway was the scene of a pileup early yesterday that left
at least 10 people dead. A long line of cars and trucks collided
one after another on a dark highway where drivers were blinded by
haze and smoke.
The highway had been closed for a time before yesterday's
accidents because of the mixture of smoke and fog from a brush fire
that may have been intentionally set. Investigators will be looking
at the decision to reopen the highway early yesterday, as well as
the question of how the fire may have started.
The crash left twisted, burned-out vehicles scattered across the
pavement, with some cars crushed beneath heavier trucks.
