Grand Island's Public Works parking lot has been mostly empty, as city plows, graders, loaders, and throwers hit the streets. And while area streets are now passable, snow is still piled up. The snow is hanging on tree limbs, too, and that build-up gets heavy, causing thick branches to snap.

Grand Island's Director of Public Works John Collins advises continuing caution: "You will see ice and tree limbs falling."
And he says low morning temperatures may freeze overnight condensation, causing slippery conditions. "I think most of that is gone but there may still be a few patches of ice here and there."

Making travel even more hazardous was an accident at the intersection of U.S. Highway 281 and 13th street this morning, which took out the traffic signal control box. Traffic lights were out for several hours, forcing confused motorists to negotiate a four way stop. Later, flashing red lights were activated.

Grand Island drivers' patience and cooperation is requested as the snow clean-up continues.

If your car is snowed in anywhere along a Grand Island designated snow route, you should dig it out and get it moved, as Director of Public Works John Collins warned: "If you're parked on the street on one of our snow routes while we're plowing, the police will come by and tow your car."
