Grand Island received a total of over nine inches of snow on Friday night and Saturday morning, but suffered almost no power outages, and the road cleanup went off without a hitch. Still, there was plenty of snow left to be shoveled, and some to enjoy as well.

As of Superbowl Sunday morning, the thawing and melting of the mounds of snow was under way, and the sun got help from blowers, throwers, and shovels.

For Billie Herron, there was just enough time to snap a few photos of frozen beauty before it faded away: "When you look at these trees with all the snow on them, when the sun hits it, it's just absolutely beautiful."

Beautiful it was. The frosted gates of Stolley Park looked like an icy, gothic entrance to the lair of Mr. Freeze.

That fine frosting transformed trees, and formed icicles.

For Grand Island's Street Superintendent Shannon Callahan, there can be danger in that cold beauty: "Be careful, there might be falling limbs, maybe some heavy icicles coming off the signals...It's going to get really icy in the morning, so maybe leave a little early and be cautious."

While others toiled to clear roads and sidewalks, sledders in Stolley Park had no apologies for seizing the day, and the snow.

Sled rider Garrett Loman summed it up: "We're just out here to have fun, and be...us."
