Heavy Snow is a Gift for Farmers

As communities around Nebraska continue to clean up from the weekend snow storm, at least one group is thankful for the thick blanket.

The snow brings farmers some much-needed moisture.

Some parts of the state have only seen half the normal amount of moisture so far this season.

State Climatologist Al Dutcher says if we continue that trend, they will have to consider issuing a drought alert.

But he says the heavy snow falling on top of a thawed ground means more of the moisture will leak into the soil, rather than running off.

That means more water in the soil when planting season starts.

But Dutcher says the state needs to see at least a normal amount of precipitation for the rest of winter in order to ensure a good growing season.

With so many variables, it's too soon to say what's in store for farmers.
