The strongest solar storm in almost a decade had airlines re-routing and astronomers like Cliff Bettis of UNL watching the sky.
Though spectacular displays are a possibility with such an event, so are surges in power lines and interference of radio waves.
Bettis said of the storm "The big problem is if the induced electric and magnetic fields in the power grid are great enough to disrupt it and then you can have power outages. And that happened in the late 80's, I think and there was a big one that wiped out the eastern part of the power grid for a time. "
Bettis said this time around we are in the clear.
Though it might be possible to view the northern lights from parts of Nebraska tonight and tomorrow night, weather permitting
