Three major areas of road work get underway today
LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - Lincoln Transportation & Utilities says three areas of Lincoln will see lane and road closures beginning Monday, May 10th.
Beginning at 8 a.m., 14th Street between Vine and “W” streets will be closed for the abandonment of a steam tunnel by the University of Nebraska Lincoln (UNL). StarTran routes 24-Holdrege and 25-Vine on the UNL downtown campus will be detoured in this area. The detour is Vine, 16th, and “W” streets. This work is scheduled to be completed by June 18.
Also starting today, the City will begin a two-phase Lincoln on the Move arterial street improvement project on Ninth Street between “A” and “R” streets. The schedule is as follows:
- Phase One will require occasional curb lane and sidewalk closures for curb and ramp reconstruction to comply with Americans with Disabilities Act requirements.
- Phase Two will have lane closures and traffic diversions for repairs, resurfacing and pavement markings. The “N” Street Cycle Track will be closed at Ninth and “N” streets. The project will affect StarTran stops on the following routes: 25-Vine, 41-Havelock, 51-West A, 52-Gaslight, 54-Vet’s Hospital, 56-Sheridan, and the Downtown Trolley.
Access to businesses and residences will be maintained whenever possible. Emergency access will be maintained at all times. This project is scheduled to be completed by September 3rd.
Finally, 27th Street between Theresa Street and Old Dairy Road will have lane closures for bridge repairs over Salt Creek. Left and right-turns may be restricted at times during this work. Fairfield Street will have limited access but traffic on 27th Street will be maintained. This work is scheduled to be completed in September.
The pedestrian and cycling trail at 27th and Fairfield streets will periodically close during the project. The recommended trail detour is to follow 33rd Street, Superior Street, 27th Street, Fairfield Street, 20th Street to Cornhusker Highway and the reverse. Bus stops on StarTran route 27-North 27th will be affected during this work. Lincoln Electric System customers are encouraged to use 20th Street to and from Fairfield Street.
Digital signs will alert traffic to the upcoming work and closures. Drivers are encouraged to seek an alternate route and are reminded to exercise caution around work zones. Lincoln Transportation and Utilities appreciates the public’s patience during these projects. LTU project dates and times are subject to change due to weather and unforeseen circumstances.
