LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) -The tax deadline is just seven days away, and local tax professionals said this year’s tax season has been especially difficult.

Across the country, there are about 4.3 million fewer returns than this time last year. The tax season started off nearly a month and a half late. There was legislation changes in mid-march, add in unemployment money, stimulus packages, changes to property tax legislation and more.

And it’s a tax season unlike any other.

“We’re all struggling with the same thing, and that is, every tax return we do takes more time to process,” said Mark Burch, President and CEO of Burch and Associates Inc.

And it’s not just preparers who are running into problems. The Nebraska Department of Revenue posted on their website that the department is experiencing delays because of an unusually high number of errors on returns that are being processed.
