Man shot, killed while walking along north Omaha street
OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Omaha Police were investigating another shooting Thursday morning that left a man dead after he was shot in the chest.
This time gunfire broke out at 2:19 a.m. near 33rd Street and Laurel Avenue. Police told 6 News that a young man was walking through the area by himself when a car drove by, and several shots were fired at him from inside the car, hitting him in the chest.
Officers responding to the call at 2:19 a.m. found the man there. Omaha Fire medics performed CPR on him as they rushed him to a Nebraska Medical Center, where he died.
Police are investigating the incident as a homicide.
OPD had no immediate description of those involved or the vehicle used. A police lieutenant said it was disheartening to see this kind of violence continue day after day.
“This individual was by himself just walking down the street and was assaulted. That’s probably more sad and frustrating to me,” Lt. Marlene Rieder said.
Police were going door to door in the area talking to potential witnesses.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the OPD Homicide Unit at 402-444-5656. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Omaha Crime Stoppers at 402-444-STOP, at omahacrimestoppers.org, or via the P3 Tips mobile app. Tips leading to an arrest in a homicide could earn a $25,000 reward.
Police responded to two other shootings in the same area over the weekend. Around 4 a.m. Saturday, a man was wounded near 28th Street and Laurel Avenue. Then about 10 p.m. Sunday, a man was found at 29th Street and Laurel Avenue with a gunshot wound; police determined he had been shot elsewhere and brought to the location by private vehicle.
