Teresa Ewins is Mayor’s selection for Chief of Police
LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - Mayor Lerion Gaylor Baird said that she will support Teresa Ewins as Lincoln’s Chief of Police on Monday.
The Lincoln Police Union also recommended Ewins be the next City of Lincoln Police Chief at a separate meeting.
Teresa Ewins has been involved in various roles in law enforcement for the past 26 years. Her prior role had her overseeing 900 officers as a commander with the San Francisco Police Department.
Ewins has spent the past few years in her position implementing community-focused policing programs focused on minimizing bias in policing.
A priority for Ewins includes incorporating mental health experts to work with members on the force, specifically pinpointing people who are frequently needing mental health services and tracking their calls.
Going forward, the Lincoln City Council will vote to appoint the next Chief of Police. Ewins would be the first female police chief, if appointed by City Council. Ewins is also openly LGBTQ.
