Body found in park in Connecticut

NORWICH, Conn. (WFSB/Gray News) - The discovery of a body buried in a park in Norwich led to a homicide investigation.

The investigation was launched at Mohegan Park on Sunday afternoon.

Police said that around 4:15 p.m., a person walking through the park noticed something sticking out of the ground.

“Believing that it might be a person, he called the Norwich Police Department to report his findings,” police said in a news release. “Upon arrival of Norwich police patrol officers, they discovered a deceased person in that area.”

Police ruled the incident a homicide. They say the victim is a Black or Hispanic male between the ages of 35 and 50 years old. His identity is otherwise unknown. Police describe him as being about 5′ 10″ tall and weighing 150 to 160 pounds. He has black hair/box braids, a goatee or short beard and is missing four top front teeth.

Authorities said the man was found in the park in a shallow grave. He died of a gunshot wound, according to police.

“Evidence at the scene suggested that the actual murder did not occur within the park. In addition, this incident appears to be a targeted attack against the deceased,” police said.

A WFSB crew saw police, along with a medical examiner’s truck, at the park on Monday morning.

The crew was able to determine that state police have been helping Norwich police with the investigation. Both could be seen searching for evidence.

Police stressed that there was no threat to the public.
