LOGAN COUNTY, W. Va (WSAZ/Gray News) - A 24-year-old sheriff’s deputy was killed in a crash while responding to a call, authorities said.

The Logan County Sheriff’s Department identified the deputy as 24-year-old Caden Mullins.

Deputy Mullins’ fiancée was airlifted from the scene of the crash to a hospital.

Deputies say Mullins and his fiancée were at a truck-or-treat event on Saturday in the Man area when he received an emergency call from the sheriff’s department.

Mullins was on his way to drop his fiancée off and head to the call when the crash occurred around 5 p.m., deputies say.

Deputies say the crash happened at the intersection of Rum Creek Road and Route 10 when a coal truck pulled off the road and hit Mullins’ vehicle.

Mullins worked for the Charleston Police Department for about a year before joining the Logan County Sheriff’s Department to be closer to family, the department said.

Several law enforcement agencies joined the community for a funeral service to mourn Mullins.
