Sponsored - The Leadership Center and the Prairie Plains Resource Institute are two non-profits that provide important services to Central Nebraska. Both organizations are hoping the public will turn out this weekend for a fun day of "fishing on the prairie."
The Leadership Center is a retreat and conference center that sits on about 43 acres on the edge of Aurora. It originally started as a place for Nebraska FFA to hold leadership conferences. It has evolved into hosting other conferences, too, along with birthday parties and even weddings.
From 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 29th, The Leadership Center along with Prairie Plains Resource Institute are hosing an afternoon of fishing. People are encouraged to come out to the center grounds, and fish in the pond. There will be other activities, too. "We will have a bonfire out, and people can take a walk to learn about the 5 acre prairie that we have on property," Leadership Center event coordinator Micheala Olsen says.
Jan Whitney is with the Prairie Plains Resource Institute. "Prairie Plains was founded in 1980," she says. "So we are going to be celebrating our 37th anniversary at this event on Saturday." The Prairie Plains Resource Institute is known for promoting prairie preservation and restoration. The group planted the 5 acre prairie behind the Leadership Center. Jan and her staff will be providing tours of the prairie as part of the weekend event.
Saturday's activities are all part of a pre-giving opportunity for the "Go Big Give" campaign. When the public comes out to fish and enjoy the outdoors at the Leadership Center on Saturday, they are encouraged to make a donation to either Prairie Plains Resource Institute or The Leadership Center. People who come to the event will be able to donate on site. Then on May 3rd, the Go Big Give campaign takes place. It's 24 hours of giving, where people are encouraged to donate on-line. The campaign helps non-profits in Hall, Merrick, Hamilton and Howard counties.
The funds raised from the weekend fishing on the prairie event and the May 3rd Go Big Give event will help finish the education center at Prairie Plains Resource Institute, and it will help repair some roofs damaged by storms at the Leadership Center.
Be sure stop by the Leadership Center from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 29th for plenty of fun.. and a chance to give.
