COLUMBUS, Neb. – Columbus Police said a 1-year-old child was found deceased in the back of a vehicle on Wednesday night.

According to a release by the Columbus Police Department, officers responded to a call of an unattended death around 5:51 p.m. on Wednesday.

A 37-year-old woman reportedly left the child in her vehicle in the parking lot of her work.

The name of the mother was not released, and the investigation is ongoing.

“There is nothing to indicate that this is nothing more than a tragic accident,” Captain Todd Thalken, of the Columbus Police Department, said.

According to statistics from kidsandcars.org, this is the 30th hot car related death in the U.S. in 2019. In 2018, there were 53 deaths, which is a record. The child is the third Nebraskan to die after being left in a hot car since 1999.
