10/11 Can Care-A-Van Returns June 3-7

The 10/11 Can Care-a-Van has been helping to feed Nebraskans since 1988. While much has changed over the past three decades, hunger has persisted in our communities. That need keeps Nebraskans coming out year after year to help stock the shelves of their local food pantries.

During the first week of June, 10/11 News personalities will help collect donations for pantries in the communities of Lincoln, Superior, Sutton, Aurora, Grand Island, Geneva, Crete, York, Columbus, Hebron and Beatrice. Additional collections will be held in Hastings, Ord, Neligh, Kearney, Nebraska City, Atkinson, Ainsworth, and Lexington.

The 10/11 Can Care-a-Van Kick Off event is scheduled for Friday, May 31st from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the 50th & O Street Hy-Vee in Lincoln. 10/11 will be broadcasting live and will be joined by radio partners KX 96.9 and KFRX for part of the time. Lincoln Hy-Vee stores will continue to host collection barrels for the entire week of the 10/11 Can Care-a-Van. All donations collected at the kick off event and in the barrels will benefit the Food Bank of Lincoln.

Black Hills Energy will partner with 10/11 for their fifth year, sending teams to volunteer at stops along the route. “We are proud to be annual sponsors of the 10/11 Can Care-A-Van. In one week, we get out and help food pantries in nearly 15 communities. When we have a chance like this to reach out and help our neighbors, it’s an opportunity for us to reflect on why we are here. To make a difference for our customers, whether it’s providing a warm home, hot shower, or volunteering our time to help those in need,“ says Jeff Sylvester, Vice President of Natural Gas Operations in Nebraska.

History of the 10/11 Can Care-a-Van:

The 10/11 Can Care-a-Van began in 1988, stemming from the national “Farm Aid” effort. It began as a 12-day food drive, but was shortened to a six-day drive in 1998. Since its creation, the Can Care-a-Van has visited numerous towns in Nebraska and northern Kansas. Last year, the 10/11 Can Care-a-Van collected 265,409 lbs.
