Man arrested on suspicion of DUI after accident that sent 5 to hospital

LINCOLN, Neb. — One person was arrested after a three-vehicle accident in southwest Lincoln sent five people to the hospital Saturday night.

The accident happened on W Van Dorn Street, not far from SW 40th Street, at about 6 p.m. Saturday.

LPD said a Ford Focus ran into a Chevrolet pickup that was trying to pull a Dodge pickup out of a ditch.

Witnesses reported the driver of the Ford Focus lost control, spun, and hit the back of the Chevrolet pickup.

The driver of the Ford Focus was Paulo Cervantes, of Crete, according to the accident report. The accident report stated that a citation against Cervantes is pending.

All five people in the Ford, including three children, were extricated and taken to the hospital. The children were all treated for minor injuries. The two adults in the car were transported in serious, but stable condition.

The driver of the Dodge pickup was identified as Justin Kowalewski, of Lincoln.

Police said Kowalewski was arrested on suspicion of DUI after a preliminary test measured his BAC at more than twice the legal limit.

He was also cited for possession of an open alcohol container in his vehicle, possession of marijuana less than 1 ounce and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Kowalewski has two prior DUI convictions.
