LINCOLN, Neb. — A Battle Creek man won $50,000 after buying a lottery ticket in Norfolk, the Nebraska Lottery says.

Vern Duncan of Battle Creek won playing the Power 5 scratch game from the Nebraska Lottery.

Duncan bought his winning ticket at Smokin’ Deals at 101 West Norfolk Avenue in Norfolk.

Duncan said he bought the ticket last Thursday, put it up on the dashboard and promptly forgot about it until Sunday. When he remembered the ticket, he scratched it off on the hood of his truck. When he saw he’d hit the $50,000 top prize, Duncan said he took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes in disbelief.

“I about had a heart attack,” he said.

Duncan said he’s planning on fixing up some of his vehicles, putting some aside for retirement and taking a few days off from work and going out of town to have some fun.

With a top prize under his belt, Duncan said he’ll continue to play Nebraska Lottery Scratch tickets.
“You never know,” he said. “Sometimes lightning hits the same place twice.”

As a $5 Scratch game, Power 5 offers players a chance to win prizes from a $5 free ticket to $50,000. The chances of winning $50,000 are one in 138,000, while the odds of winning any prize are one in 3.92.

The Nebraska Lottery says more than $717 million has been raised for the Nebraska Lottery’s beneficiary funds since the Lottery began in 1993. All 93 counties in Nebraska have benefited from projects funded with these Nebraska Lottery proceeds.
