You can enjoy some great ice cream, and feel a little bit of nostalgia at a popular destination on the outskirts of Lincoln.
At a recent customer appreciation day, we caught up with the owner of C & L Dairy Sweet on West Van Dorn. Hap Loomis has owned and operated the business for 40 years. "Everybody laughs when they see the store, and they say this is a little bitty place," Loomis said. "40 years ago I moved the building from West O street where it had been in business for a number of years there. I opened up the ice cream shop here. It's always been an ice cream place."
When Loomis first started, she was the only place in the area to offer lunches, as she was really in the country. Now, there are many houses, and a nearby Russ's Market. Lee's Chicken is the only nearby business to be in the immediate area longer than the C & L Dairy Sweet. As you might imagine, things have changed through the years, including a new roundabout in front of the business. But one thing that remains the same is the quality food, ice cream and service. "The biggest difference we have with other ice cream shops is every Tuesday and Wednesday we sell the lemon ice cream," Loomis said. "It seems like those are our busiest days."
Loomis celebrated the 40 years of business with her 3 daughters and their spouses, her six grandchildren, and her four great grandchildren. "I think people like to come here, because they like to come back to the old times and the '50's. I get that comment every once in a while. They say this is so fun, because it's just like old times," Loomis said.
C & L Dairy Sweet is open from April to the end of September from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m., 7 days a week. During the summer, the business stays open until 10 p.m.
