Crime Stoppers: Police say woman stole purse from surgery center, charged $4,000

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) -- Lincoln Police are asking for help finding a woman who stole a purse from inside the Nebraska Surgery Center, at 625 S 70th Street, on December 19.

"It is something that we see pop up over and over again as we're going through Crime Stoppers, because people do trust their coworkers. So they'll tend to leave phones, keys, wallets, and purses unattended," said Ofc. Sara Genoways with the Lincoln Police Department.

Police said this is not the first time a hospital or doctors office has had someone roaming around and taking someone else's belongings.

"These people who partake in fraud professionally, they can rack up a lot of money very quickly," she said.

Surveillance video later shows the suspect using the victim's credit cards at JC Penny's, Walmart, Gamestop, and Menards. Police said the suspect charged more than $4,000 before the victim learned of the theft.

Officer Sara Genoways said the suspect used the self checkout to buy numerous giftcards, which is a red flag for employees monitoring those areas.

This case serves as an important reminder to watch your belongings and surroundings, even at work and places where you feel most comfortable.

"If you see someone walking around, and you don't know know who they are, stop and ask them who they are there to see. Who are they? What are their names? If someone gets really hostile when asked a very simple question that should be a red flag that person doesn't belong there," said Officer Genoways.

If you confront someone, and they become hostile, immediately tell a coworker or police.

"These people who steal things like this -- their ideal crime is going undetected. They don't want a confrontation. They don't want someone stopping and talking to them."
