Current Block 54 plans scrapped
A $65 million hotel and condo project was supposed to be built at 9th and O streets.
But now, the Block 54 project isn't happening as is.
10/11 learned from the developer, Lincoln hotel group, it plans to still build two hotels and parking space.
But it's not going to build the high end condos.
The reason for smaller scale project, was higher construction costs.
But this delay, Isn't good news for some businesses downtown.
Lincoln Hotel Group told 10/11 on Monday there will still be a hotel at 9th and O.
But it will be 8-10 stories rather than the 14-15 stories.
Now, one business down the street says it's frustrated construction isn't happening soon.
"It's a little disappointing,” says Danny's Downtown Deli Owner, Danny Patrick.
Danny Patrick owns The Downtown Deli at 10th and O.
His restaurant sits one block away from where construction should have been taking place.
"We were looking forward to feeding a bunch of hungry construction workers and inevitably the tenants of the hotel and any of the businesses that ended up there,” said Patrick.
Patrick says he's seen the benefit of new buildings coming to the area.
He saw a bump in sales when student housing was being built near-by.
"Maybe they'll put something a little bit smaller in there and it will move forward and we will be able to feed all of those hungry people,” said Patrick.
The lot has sat empty, full of dirt and weeds for a year and a half.
But-Patrick says he has hopes for the future, and he has a few ideas in mind for the empty space.
"I would like to see them make a parking lot out of it so you know, Husker fans can have a place to park closer to the stadium,” said Patrick.
The developers say they hope to have construction started by the beginning of next year, but they still have to go through the city to negotiate plans.
