You are encouraged to visit the Main Street Studios in downtown Elkhorn to see some talented Nebraska artists in action.
If you travel to the Main Street Studios, you might think you'll be in a suburban area, which in a way you are. But going into downtown Elkhorn is almost like being transported in to a rural, small town environment. The streets are filled with shops, restaurants, and of course, the art studio.
We recently visited there, and talked to artist Ashley Spitsnogle who graduated from Diller-Odell High School, went to Doane University, and now is doing very well with her art work. "I do painting and drawing, and I illustrate the children's book "Josh the Baby Otter"," Spitsnogle said. "Since being in this gallery for about a year now, I got licensed through the University of Nebraska to sell Nebraska art work. So, I've been painting a lot of Husker sports pictures. I also enjoy doing abstract paintings."
There are five artists that work in the gallery, and there are five studio spaces. "All of the doors are open so when people come to visit, they can walk through and see the process of what the artists are working on," Spitsnogle said. "The owner of the gallery, Tyler Curnes, does the glass work in here. Dave Biehl is our bronze sculptor. Levent Oz is a silversmith, and he has curated all of the jewelry in the gallery, and has collected it over a number of years. And then Jane Kathol is our other painter, so there are two painters here," Spitsnogle said.
The downtown Elkhorn area is a place where you could enjoy a weekend. "People will come, eat lunch, walk through the different businesses, and go to dinner here as well," Spitsnogle said. While visiting the Main Street Studios, be sure to check out the other businesses, and even Fala's Treasures and Coffee House a couple of blocks down.
