Ruby James has a heart for survivors of domestic abuse. That's why she's helped to give away more than 1,000 purses over the past 15 years. She is currently collecting new and lightly used purses that she can give to women who will really appreciate them.
Ruby hopes to collect 300 purses to give away the weekend before Easter in mid-April.
Ruby says that along with some jewelry, each bag will be equipped with dental items, cosmetics and and soaps that people have donated, "Some of these women come in there with nothing on their back and when they get a purse they're absolutely ecstatic, so we've continued to do that for 15 years."
Donna Stewart is teaming up with Ruby to help lead the charge and collect as many purses as possible, "It is so heart-felt. I think that we want to tell these women we care, we support you and just show them that they are loved."
Donna says Ruby's church used to give away Easter baskets to abused women, "I think when Ruby realized we didn't need Easter baskets, we needed purses, that speaks to a woman. A woman's purse is an integral part of who she is and some of these women have to leave in the dead of night without anything."
The purses will go to victims of domestic abuse at four different Lincoln agencies...St. Monica's, Voices of Hope, Friendship Home and Fresh Start. Donna says, "If we can support them and help them re-establish and help to ground them again through these agencies that's such a blessing to be able to share God's love that way and I'm so glad Ruby started this 15 years ago."
If you'd like to donate new or gently used purses and personal hygiene items, you can drop them off at St. Monica's Addiction Treatment Center--which is located near 70th & O in Lincoln. (120 Wedgewood Dr, Lincoln, NE 68510 - (402) 441-3768)
