Elevated roundabout coming to South Lincoln
The city of Lincoln is putting its final touches on a multimillion dollar project that should get rid of some of the headaches near S 14th and Old Cheney. On Tuesday the city held its final open house on the project and they hope to start construction by the end of 2019.
For years the city has been working on a plan to build an elevated roundabout in the area, but in the last year community engagement director Steven Wolf said they have been working on safety for everyone. From improving the line of vision for drivers to addressing some of the flooding issues on Warlick Blvd, Wolf said all of these changes will still keep the project under budget.
One of the biggest changes Wolf said a lot of people have been asking about is improving the safety for cyclists and pedestrians. Under the new plan Wolf said a path will run underneath the roundabout. “"This dramatically improves safety as well as improves the efficiency of all modes of transportation to get through the intersection,” said Wolf.
As for construction, Wolf said the city is working in 6 phases so that most of the roads will stay open throughout all of construction. Wolf said construction should be finished by 2021.
