Craft brewery in Nebraska's Panhandle
Craft breweries are quite popular in Nebraska, and if you are heading to Scottsbluff, you might want to check out one that's located downtown.
Flyover Brewing Company opened over Labor Day weekend of last year, so the business is fairly new. It's billed as the only craft brewery in the Nebraska Panhandle. Emergency room doctor Joe Margheim and a fellow emergency room doctor decided to create the business. "My wife does a lion's share of day to day management, we have a general manager, and we have a professional brewer," Marghiem said. "This building used to be a typewriter shop, then it was a clothing store, and an antique store. We bought it from the owner when it was an antique store."
The name "Flyover Brewing Company" is a nod to the idea that some people think the Midwest is "flyover country". "I'm a pilot, my partner has some pilot training, so we are both interested in aviation," Margheim said. "The flyover name came from us being belittled that we are flyover country, so we decided to own it." Much of the decor was done by Margheim's wife. The tables are zinc-topped tables and the bases were built by local high school students as part of a project. "I guess a big part of our decor is a plane wing that we got from an aircraft junkyard in Colorado," Margheim said. That wing is positioned over the area where the beer is distributed.
The business serves wood-fired pizzas, and Margheim said visitors can expect a professionally-produced, quality beer from an award-winning brewer when they come to Flyover Brewing Company. "Our brewer has been doing this for years. He was a medal winner before he came here, and since he came here, he's won us a couple of medals and we haven't even been open that long," Margheim said. "We do everything from lagers, to IPA's, to stouts."
The brewing company is open Wednesday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
