GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - A former Grand Island Police officer is on probation for a misdemeanor conviction in a case that dates back to last fall.

Michael Lyon, 31, was originally charged with misdemeanor third degree assault in connection with an October 30 assault reported by a 26-year-old Grand Island woman.

Prosecutors reduced the charge and Lyon pleaded no contest to an attempted misdemeanor.

He was sentenced Friday to nine months probation. He is also subject to random chemical testing.

Police said the event did not occur while the officer was on duty.

Lyon is no longer with the Grand Island police department.
