Grand Island boy killed in accident in Iowa

ATLANTIC, Ia. (KSNB) A Grand Island, Nebraska boy was killed and seven other people were injured in a crash on an icy Interstate 80 north of Atlantic, Iowa Sunday night.

The accident was reported at 10:30 p.m. Joshua Tavares, 9, was killed.

The Iowa State Patrol says all of the victims were westbound in a 2004 GMC when the vehicle lost traction due to freezing rain and icy conditions. It rolled into a ditch, coming to a stop on the passenger side.

The driver is identified as Jesus Cantero-Perez, 40, of Grand Island.

The passengers injured are identified as:

Wendy Tavares, 35
Ashley Tavares, 11
Kimberly Tavares, 12
Yamilet Cantero, 11
Jonathan Tavares, 15
Emanual Cantero, 10

All seven of the injured were taken to Cass County Memorial Hospital.
