LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - Lincoln Police have referred a nine-year-old boy to the county attorney's office for arson after they said he started a grass fire near an apartment complex at Portia and Knox streets.

Lincoln Fire and Rescue said the nine-year-old and a second child started the fire around 3:30 Sunday afternoon.

Lincoln Police declined to give any information about the second child, who is not facing any citations. The children's parents are also not facing any charges related to the fire.

The fire came within 10 feet of the apartment buildings and burned about an acre of grass behind the building.

According to LFR, smoke was visible just north of downtown. There was fear of the apartments catching on fire, but no buildings caught fire. Multiple parts of the grass and shrub did catch fire.

The total cost of damage to the apartment building is about $1,000.
