Judge orders parents of abandoned twins to appear in court

KEARNEY, Neb. (KOLN) -- A Buffalo County judge has issued an order requiring the unknown parents of abandoned twins to appear at a court hearing next week.

The judge issued the order so the parents can explain their actions.

The twin boys were born at CHI Health Good Samaritan on February 2.

On February 4, police were called to the hospital when hospital officials reported the mother left the hospital and abandoned the twins.

The babies were then placed in the custody of Health and Human Services.

Police said they are looking for mother as a welfare check. Officers want to make sure the mother is OK.

According to police, officers have been unable to locate either parent.

The Kearney Police Department is also looking into whether Nebraska's "Safe Haven" law applies. The law, enacted in 2008, provides that a parent can leave a child in the custody of a hospital and not be prosecuted.

Kearney police said Tuesday morning that it's not clear if the law applies when a parent provides false information to the hospital.

Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to contact the Kearney Police Department non-emergency number at 308-237-2104.
