Too many times, children with disabilities, for one reason or another, aren't offered the same opportunities as able bodied children.
That's why Suzanne Dougherty came up with a way for special needs kids to have the same type of fun they're peers are having.
Two of the most important elements of Suzanne's life are physical therapy & dancing.
Fortunately for kids in and around the Capital City, Suzanne dreamed up a way to combine her two passions... and she calls it 'Dancing Beyond Limits.' Suzanne explains, "It was something I always knew I wanted to do. I grew up dancing and then also was a dance teacher but I'm also a physical therapist with kids so I knew I wanted to combine those two loves."
Suzanne is a 2003 graduate of Lincoln Southeast High School and this former Shirette now lives in Omaha and works at Children's Hospital. But she finds time every week to return to her hometown, "It's fun, I wouldn't miss it."
Suzanne shares teaching responsibilities with Stephanie Chase.
Suzanne says, "Dancing Beyond Limits' is just like any other dance class except we have one on one volunteers for each of our dancers and so we can adapt the class to almost any ability.
Dance buddies are the key to making this all work so well since the program was created in 2012.
If you'd like to volunteer to be a dance buddy and get your child involved, here's how to go about it.
Our Spring Dates are as follows:
