Lively Livestock 4H and FFA chapters from across the state have come together to help the countless farmers impacted.
Many of the teenagers come from farming communities and plan on continuing to farm when they become adults. They say they can't imagine just how hard it has been for their fellow farmers during the floods.
"Being in York County is a really fortunate thing for all of us,” said Rachelle Allen. “We have a lot of people who know what it’s like to raise livestock and we know the hardships that people go through. It’s really amazing to see everybody pitch together and we really wanted to use all the great community ties all our Ag. programs and 4H clubs have already."
The state says livestock damage could reach half-a-billion dollars. Many of the teenagers here already work on farms or own their own livestock. They knew they had to help.
"I’m a livestock owner myself,” said Hailee Pohl, President of Lively Livestock 4H Club. “If we didn’t get the help if we were in a flood or something like that, it would be really bad and we probably couldn’t spring back."
They are taking donations to family farms hit so bad by flood waters they either lost or lost track of almost all of their animals during the storm.
"We all kinda come from a farm so we know what it'd be like if something like that happened to us. This has all grown a lot bigger than we thought it’d be a lot faster than we thought it be, so it’s a good problem," said Colby Bolton, Vice President of Lively Livestock 4H.
The group plans to take up all of the donated items to farms on Sunday.
"I really think it’s going to be a really emotional experience,” said Allen. “A really great experience especially for all the younger kids to see that really in Nebraska what we do is help each other out."
The group will be taking donations for the next two days:
Friday March 22nd: Tractor Supply & Orschlens in York, NE
Saturday March 23rd: Tractor Supply & Orschlens in York, NE
You can also donate feed through Nutrition Services in York, NE.
