Man starts fire trying to stop rug from shedding

LINCOLN, Neb. – Lincoln Police cited a 45-year-old man for negligent burning after he burnt the frayed edges of a rug to stop it from shedding, and in turn, caused $250,000 in damage to the apartment complex.

LPD said on Saturday around 7 p.m., officers responded to a fire at an apartment complex near 21st and J streets.

Richard Murray, 45, was contacted by police and said he took his rug to the balcony and burnt the frayed edges to stop the rug from shedding.

He set the rug down and went inside, police said, and a few minutes later, he discovered the balcony was on fire and the complex was engulfed a short time later.

The fire caused an estimated $250,000 in damage.
